Today is National Michelada Day and if I know anything about living in SoCal, it’s that we LOVE a good Michelada! Created in Mexico, this “hangover cure” is a staple for brunch, backyard parties, sports games, weekend hangs, Disney adventures, vacations….you get the picture. Being in SoCal, our love for craft beer is also just as strong. We combined the two for a unique and modern spin on this traditional recipe.
Disclaimer: I have to admit, I’ve tasted craft beer Micheladas before and wasn’t a fan, BUT thanks to Eder Escamilla or Eder Photo, our craft beer & photog guru, he suggested using Thorn Brewing‘s Barrio Lager. This Baja style lager is actually a pretty impressive choice since it is light, refreshing, and has all the right ingredients to compliment traditional Michelada flavors. But if craft beer isn’t your thing, this recipe can be used with or without craft beer, but I gotta say, this version is pretty dang majestic!
- Thorn Brewing Barrio Lager Mexican Lager
- Clamato Juice
- Hot Sauce (We used Tapatio)
- Worcestershire Sauce
- Soy Sauce
- Kosher Salt
- 2 Limes
- Optional Garnish: Tajin Clasico Seasoning & Kosher Salt
- Rim the the glass with a mixture of Tajin Clasico Seasoning & Kosher Salt.
- Add 5 dashes of hot sauce, 3 dashes of worcestershire sauce, 2 dashes of soy sauce, and sprinkle with pepper.
- Add a splash of Clamato Juice.
- Squeeze one whole lime into the glass and stir.
- Fill Glass with cubed ice (for an old-school style, forgo the ice)
- Pour in one bottle/can of Thorn Brewery Barrio Lager or your beer of choice.
- Garnish with a lime wedge!
- We really love Thorn’s Barrio Lager because it is a Baja-style lager. It is light and tasty enough for a Michelada without being too heavy. However, craft beer is craft beer, so if you’re looking for something MUCH lighter (or classic), we suggest going with your traditional Mexican beers. Our favorite Mexican beers include Corona, Tecate, and Pacifico.
- Some prefer ice in their Micheladas and some don’t. This is totally your preference!
- My husband is VERY specific about how his Michelada is prepared (spoken as a true Mexican-American) so I understand the struggle of the perfect beer cocktail! The great news is that there are so many ways to customize the Michelada and we encourage you to “season to taste”…amount of spice, salt, sourness, beer choice…play around until you find your flavor.
